The Future: Majulah Singapura

Updated: Dec 13, 2017

"We intend to see that Singapore will be here in 1000 years. That is your duty and mine."

Lee Kuan Yew

In Singapore’s quest to remain a forward thinking nation focused on economic growth and enduring independence, there is no doubt that Singaporeans will need to overcome considerable economic, social and environmental challenges in their future. Singapore’s futuristic construction of nature, Gardens by the Bay, is a perfect representation of Lee Kuan Yew’s vision for Singapore and indicative of Singapore’s goal to exist as a completely self-sufficient nation in the future.

This trip provided us with a thorough insight into the Singapore Story. Despite its short history as an independent nation and constraints which shape this nation’s foreign policy, Singapore is a proud city with a strong sense of national identity. To maintain its status as a cultural and economic hub of Asia, the Singaporean people must work together to preserve positive relationships with other nations, such as Australia and continue to show off Singapore’s unique culture and innovation through more sustainable means.

During the moments of this tour that I will never forget, I was especially thankful to share this experience with a group that have collectively pushed each other to learn and make the most of every day. In the more challenging moments of the trip, I felt fortunate to be working with a group who were so willing to adapt to different scenarios and remain open-minded when facing new cultural ideals.

I leave this study tour having learned about not only democracy, culture and identity, but also friendship and cooperation. As we said our final goodbyes to Singapore and each other from the top of the Marina Bay Sands, we looked down upon a beautiful, yet complicated city where we have been challenged, inspired and made friends for life.
